Update
October 30, 2009
Well over a month since I last posted. (Not that anyone seems to be following this blog)
I’ve applied for a transfer to the School of Visual Arts. Upon my hopeful acceptance, I’ll be studying photography there rather than psychology here at New York University. Hope for the best.
I have plenty of images to share, but rather than post them individually here (which I’ll get to eventually, maybe) just go here: flickr.com/davealvarez

Fail, Sunday Edition
September 20, 2009
In spur of the moment, I decided to go out today and shoot a few rolls of film and walk down to work and use the darkroom facilities that I so happily get to use for free, and see what I come up with.
I shot two 35mm rolls (an Ilford Delta 100, and a Kodak T-Max P3200) with my trusted ol’ Nikon FE, and two 120mm rolls with the Mamiya C330 that I borrowed from work. In addition to the three rolls from yesterday (screwed up two rolls with the Mamiya, ’cause I hadn’t learned how to use it properly, one with the Holga), I have five 120mm rolls to have developed. The shop I’m going to now (Forum Foto on Waverly Place) was closed today, so I’ll have to wait and see what I got tomorrow.
Two major screw ups that rendered all of today’s efforts moot.
1. Brilliantly thought to shoot the T-Max P3200 during the day. On a bright, beautiful day like today – it all turned out neutral-toned. Gray. No tones. Useless.
2. After shooting the P3200, I started using the Ilford Delta 100, and forgot to change the camera ASA to correspond with the switch. Basically, the camera was set to use 3200 speed film, but I was using 100 speed instead. Came out even worse than the first roll.
So, hopefully the few 120 film rolls I have will salvage the day, but I’ll have to wait until tomorrow. Didn’t want to waste the rest of the day, so I printed from a few old negatives, and tried to use one from the 3200 roll – again, have to wait til tomorrow to see how it came out.
Needless to say, I’m tired.
Work
September 19, 2009
First full week working as a Darkroom monitor = success.
First day working as a teaching assistant = success.
First full week of class = fail.
The way I see it now, I’m taking classes so I can keep work-study to work in the darkroom and as Carlos Reyes’ teaching assistant. Not really. A lot of fun though.
It’s hard concentrating in class though. A ton of reading, and very few written assignments spread throughout the semester – which is a big problem ’cause I need to actually pay attention to due dates. Shouldn’t be an issue though if I stay on top of all this.
Need to make time to actually do my own personal work. Not that I have any creative ideas I’d like to pursue, but I did borrow a Mamiya from the cages, so we’ll see what I can do with it over this weekend.

Productive Procrastination
September 16, 2009

Instead of doing “homework,” I started scanning and uploading select black & white prints. The one above is my favorite. Took it a few months ago, I spoke with the man for a while before giving him my hat.

Acute Viral Rhinopharyngitis
September 12, 2009
I’ve got a cold.
It’s not fun, whatsoever. I started working in the darkroom last night, and despite the desolation and little amount of actual work to do- the cold didn’t make anything easier.
Great, chill co-workers though. Which does make things easier. But I’m pretty sure I’ll be working alone Friday nights normally. Otherwise, Monday mornings I’ll be working with my boss.
On a side note- I’ll hopefully be putting up photos, being that this is a photo blog, by early next week.
Sophomore Year?
September 9, 2009
Another school year, another blog. Let’s hope I keep this one- I regret deleting the last one.
This time in between Sophomore and Junior year. Complications with extra credits confuse me. I have enough that I’d only take about 11 credits in the Fall of 2011- which is considered part-time if I’m not mistaken, therefore no financial aid provided. I could be wrong but I figure if I take Winter and Summer courses, I’ll graduate a full year early- May 2011. Still have to work out the kinks to that plan.
